Reporting Use for a specific user  (Australia)

I have downloaded the donor version after donating and am disappointed in the program. The overall program seems to be a great concept, however, it seems to be greatly lacking in testing and debugging. That is I experience overflow error messages, buttons do not appear to be linked to correct operation and in some areas the expected obvious reporting is missing.

I am having difficulty making a report for our requirements. I am required to show the usage data of a specific squid proxy user to management and have problems trying the following various ways to attempt to get this:

1) In the users section, right clicking on the user and choosing 'show visited domains' opens a new window of which the ' domain, requests, bandwidth, total time ' section would be helpful however, I see no option to save this as html or xls or even to print it.

2) In the users section, right clicking on the user and choosing 'day by day' opens a new window of which the '  date, requests, bandwidth, total time' section would be helpful however, I see only an 'export to MS Excel' button which does nothing.

3) In the USERS section (bottom right quadrant), there is a button to send the information to HTML, however, it lists the top domains visited but not by user. It seems to do the same as the HTML button in the DOMAIN section.

4) In the USERS section (bottom right quadrant), there is a button to send the information to Excel, however, it sends it to a filetype that I expect is too new (We have Excel 2002 and 2000) so I am unsure if this will even provide the required info, but expect it would be the same info as HTML format.

Could you please provide information as to how to obtain the reports of a particular users activity.

Also could you please explain how the time is calculated. Is it based on the actual surfing time (ie downloading of web page), or how long the page has been opened for (eg: if a user opens a page in the morning, leaves it open, then later in the day clicks something on that page - would it register the whole day or just the couple of minutes of browsing time).?

Finally, an option to print all of a users proxy use for a period cronologically would be very helpful. That way a clear trail of exactly how the user has spent their day could be provided in a report and provided to management.

I think your program has much potential, but is not ready for real use as yet.

Thanks

Re: Reporting Use for a specific user  (N/A)

Hi, keep in mind that this software, was born for personal use, then because I think that other people can have the same needed, I decided to release it.
There aren't any testing and debugging other than mine, previous version was downloaded over than 1700 times, but I received 3 comments, and only 2 thank's =(

I know that software could be improved, and in fact it's a free software, elsewhere I could sell it.

Actual version, at this time, was downloaded 81 times, and only you wrote to me, it's impossible that no bug where found, but if anyone tell to me...

I've fix all the bugs that people sent to me, and I'll do the same for these: note that I'll do it in my free time.
I added the Donors Version to collate some donations to support website hosting, and domain registration, but I develop .Traf for free.
(p.s: 81 downloads, 2 donors )

now, passing to your problems :
0) I've already found an overflow error with larger archive, I've already fixed it and I'll send it to you;
1/2) actually only main form stats can be exported, I'm adding other to the next version;
3) fixed, thanks
4) fixed, thanks

The .xls files are Microsoft Excel XML format, Excle give you a message that the format isn't usual, but if you continue it can read the file without problem.

Time : the first you said, it's based on the request time, so the time of use of the bandwidth; the second idea, IMHO is useless, because a user could open a page, then switch to Microsoft Word, use it for all the day, then at 06 PM surf to another page...the with actual tabbed browser, the problem is extended...

The day by day should serve to this scope, do you need more info ? Which ?!

I know .Traf potential, but without feedback I can't do miracles =/

Thanks to you, really

Re: Reporting Use for a specific user  (Australia)

Hi Luke

Thanks for the prompt response and superquick fixes. I am amazed that no-one does testing for you, and even more amazed and the lack of feedback, both positive and negative. I would be happy to do testing for you on it as dotTraf does have good potential. I eagerly await your update file.

The time, I just wanted to confirm how the time field worked in .Traf. I agree that the time that a page stays open in a browser is pretty useless.

As far as XLS dump, they definitely are not supported in my Excel 2000. It tries to open them as a delimited text file and requests the delimiter info, eg commas, tabs etc. As the export information is very basic, I would think that a very basic XLS export (eg: 97) or even a CSV format would be more universal and do not think that any functionality would be lost for new versions of Excel. (I personally prefer to use OpenOffice Calc, but do own MS Office).

The functionality of export (points 1 & 2) of the non-main form will be what I require so with this it will become a very helpful program for management reports pertaining to a specific user. Thanks for supporting the product and I wish you all the very best with its development and future success.

Thanks

Re: Reporting Use for a specific user  (Australia)

Hi Luke

I am happy to test this and report back to you. I notice that your release notes say that you have released the update and above you mention that you've "already found an overflow error with larger archive, I've already fixed it and I'll send it to you". Could you please send it and I will test it.

Thanks
